I bought my son a 10GB iPod a year ago and never dreamed I would want one. I'm of the generation that doesn't absolutely, positively HAVE TO HAVE music strapped to my side all day. But after seeing how much he enjoyed his iPod, I discovered a unique way for me to use use one to unclutter my music collection of CDs, vinyls, cassettes, and open real tapes from my youth. You can tell I'm no Gen Xer, but I still enjoy a variety of classic rock, jazz and classical.
Now my music collection has been digitized and stored on a 40GB iPod Photo. Ripping the CDs was a snap, and dragging album art from various web sites was easy and fun. Digitizing the vinyl, cassettes, and open real tapes was time-consuming since it has to be done in real time, but it was fun to relive some of the music I hadn't played in decades! (P.S. I've got the equipment to do this, but you can buy an inexpensive cable and software to connect a turntable, cassette or open real deck to your Mac or PC.) So now my CD collection is stored away and all my music is in an uncluttered corner of our kitchen. My wife, who is no techno-geek, even enjoys playing with the iPod because she knows every piece of music we own is stored on this cute little device from Apple. She even takes it on her walks and snaps it back on the dock beside the Bose when she returns. No more CDs to fumble with!
I chose the iPod Photo for the color screen. The newer models don't include the dock, A/V cables, or hard case with belt clip. (I found one in the close out section at Best Buy for less than the new 30GB models ($350ish.) So snatch one of these up if you can.
One more thing, the color screen is sharp enough for me to see without my reading glasses and the album art helps me identify the music selection after scrolling through the menus. I predict all future iPods will have color screens.
So even if you're not in the 50+ demographic, but want to simplify your life, go out there and buy an iPod. You'll never regret it and your kids and grand kids will think you're AWESOME!!
