For the average user, this scanner will do fine. Works with Vista and W7 64-bit.
4 buttons make this unit easy and fun to use.You can scan in a document or photo
and preview it on your monitor with no problems at all. The copy function works fast, and sends a crisp-sharp image to the printer. The email function lets you copy and paste anything you scan into the program and direct mail functions work as well.
I have used scanners since 1991. I have used cheap (as cheap as they get) scanners and I have used extremely expensive scanners. This scanner is not impressive, in fact it is one of the worst scanners I have ever used. I have owned much cheaper scanners producing superior quality scans. Scan quality is worst at 600 dpi and produces strong vertical banding (3 pixels wide) throughout the scanned images especially in the dark areas. Making them totally useless. I tested scanning at 300 and 800 with somewhat better results, but is completely unacceptable for a brand new scanner that costs $100 including tax.
Canon also boasts 48bit color depth, but this is either a blatant lie or a very well hidden feature. It exports only as 8-bit images as far as I am able to see.
I am terribly disappointed with the scan quality and will return the LiDE200 to the store ASAP.
The lack of speed and annoyingly harsh scan sounds also adds to my frustrations and comes as a surprise for a scanner at this price level and supposed finesse.
My conclusion is that the scanner is a lacking compromise between nice small package & design and manufacturing costs. it seems a lot of corners were cut in pursuit of higher margins/profits.
