I hunted a long time for a decent scanner in order to eliminate paper. This little baby, though pricey, delivers. Even at its lowest level of scanning the image looks great and it takes almost no time at all, perfect for scanning docs. The software is blazingly fast (comes w/full Adobe PDF) --(I can't imagine how Brother, in all their wisdom, decided to use their proprietary Presto! software which on my 12.1/1.33/1.5gigRAM PWB runs achingly, stupendously, fascinatingly slow for their well-priced MFC 5480 device). I've also scanned pics at high level and the quality is to my eye, amazing -- much of the depth in B & W photographs is preserved, though I can't say for color as I haven't been scanning color, but I think it's great.
The main DRAWBACK is that you can't scan different sizes of paper without adjusting the software (spared them a button on the machine, I suppose) so just be sure to organize yr docs by size.
Otherwise, though pricey, I have no regrets about having purchased this machine.
