I found installation to be straight forward and simple. It has a variety of settings that you can use to customize your scans. It offers a few ways to work, including OCR modes, and comes bundled with very useful software. Since installation I have scanned in a few hundred pages and had only one paper jam. It is good about letting you start where you were when the jam occurred. Duplex scanning is something that is essential if you are going to work through a lot of paper and this scanner does it well. I loaded 40 pages into the sheet feeder and it scanned them all quickly and without a problem.
While it is the default mode, I do not recommend just scanning paper into a default folder and letting the ScanSnap software name the file. The result will be a string of numbers (date and time) that you may not recognize when it comes to searching for the file. I recommend spending the time to rename those files.
I scanned a photograph mixed in with other paper documents and it did a credible job of doing that, at least for viewing on the screen.
It comes bundled with Adobe Acrobat Pro 8.0 but works well with the Adobe Acrobat 9.4.1 which is installed on my Mac.
I have not explored all the software and settings options available but I am happy to say that I was scanning documents to pdf files within 45 minutes of opening the box.
The only minor complaint I can mention is that one sided documents that bleed through the other side of the page will be scanned and you have to delete those pages later after saving the file. Perhaps there is a way around this but I have not found it. This minor problem is certainly not significant enough to deter me from recommending this scanner.
The scan snap manager software is reliable. Once you set it up, it is ready to go when you open the scanner. I set mine up to send the scan to the Adobe Acrobat application on my iMac. Once the scan is complete the file is there almost instantly. Then it is just a matter of choosing an OCR mode, ( I choose to have Acrobat recognize text in OCR and in English only), naming and saving the file.
My bottom line is the combination of hardware and software in this scanner return very good value for the price.
