I went through hell trying to setup a good internet signal in my new apartment. I have a cisco valet plus router connected to a cable modem in the office which is at one end of the apartment. On the other end is the living room which is where I have my Tivo, Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. I was able to connect all of them through wifi but the signal was too weak for my 360 and PS3 to stream Netflix with any kind of decent picture. At first I thought a repeater/extender would do the trick but I would have connection problems with all my equipment in the living room. Either having IP issues or weak signals with little improvement to my situation. Long story short I went through two weeks of customer service, troubleshooting, and frustration to end up no better than from where I started.
Low and behold I had briefly heard about powerline networking and started putting more research into it. The Netgear XEB1004 was the only product out there that would meet my needs without having to break the bank. At my wits end I bought it and brought it home. After about 5 minutes of just plugging one end into my router and the other in the living room to all my equipment I was up and running. No setup, passwords or anything of that nature to configure. It was like having an ethernet cable wired directly to my router. Both my PS3 and 360 ran Netflix at 1080p and in 5.1 surround without any hiccups.
I installed the utility software that was included the box. It found the XEB1004 and said that it was running at a rate of 36.65mbps which was more than enough for what I needed. It gives you the option to setup encryption but I found it unnecessary since you can't connect to the internet unless you're directly wired to the XEB1004. The indicator lights on the box are simple to understand and always let you know that you are connected and receiving a signal to each plugged in item.
All in all this is an amazing product. I have bandwidth speeds faster than any wireless signal can give me without the hassle of setting up any passwords or fiddling with extensive configurations. I recommend it to everybody who wants a simple yet powerful solution to your home networking needs.
