Sony DRN-XM01C Satellite Radio Receiver reviews

If you're looking at this receiver, you're probably asking yourself "Is XM really worth it?" And the answer is "defintely yes!" I've had it for about 6 months now and I can't imagine what I was doing without it. They've got great programming, almost no commercials, and endless variety. The one thing that made me feel secure when I bought this reciever was the price they're going for on Ebay. Even if you don't like the service, you can sell it again and get lots of your money back. I couln't imagine more of an incentive to give it a try...

Just got the Sony XM and I am very pleased with it. The reception and sound quality are very good. I was surprised to see that it holds reception under most over passes (even quite long ones). My guess is that it has some sort of buffer or cache (but I am not sure of this). The controls are a little lacking and it would have been nice to have a second or third set of presets (like FM1 FM2 etc.) Mounting could be a problem - I have used my center glove box (with a FM Modulator bought off of ebay for about $12) to avoid having spagetti all over my car. I find the remote useful and its angle appears sufficient to control the base unit. I think the antenna is OK for a standard unit but I will probably look for a lower profile antenna and paint it the color of my car - to avoid announcing to the world that I have XM sitting in an unattended parked car. As a final synopsis - the technology is amazing and the fact that I can listen to what I want - Reaggae, Jazz, Rock, Etc. - when ever I want makes the rather high price worth it. I have no regrets and would recommend this to anyone who spends a lot of time in their car or to those who cant stand main stream radio.

I use this receiver with the cassette adapter. I am able to move the radio from car to car easily. Yes there are a few wires - but when you have 3 cars - its GREAT!

As a police officer this radio makes a shift go by so much quicker. This is perfect because i can set it up in my polce car in about 30 seconds. I dont worry about cobering up the wires just plug it up and go catch bad guys.

I have this model and love it. I use it in my work truck during the week, and my personal car on weekends. Recently, I drove cross country in a rental truck and due to it's portability, I brought it with me. The writer that said it is hard to change channels is an idiot! The unit comes with a remote. I set the presets to a few stations that I like, and just flip away without ever taking my eyes off the road.

Try to read this display while you are driving... then again don't. Just got my Sony stolen. Funny thing is that the thief will never be able to activate. Go for one of the 2-piece units, check out the Pioneer. It appears to be more legible, and looks less like something that should be stolen by a non-tech-saavy thief.

I wouldn't pay $450 and then another $120 a year for a Sat. raido that wasn't entirly commercial-free. If that is the case why pay $120 a year??? Why are you paying to hear commercials???!!!

Yes, the Sony has the problems mentioned- diplay is hard to read, could use more pre-sets. But I am amazed that they get all the electronics into such a small package. Dropouts do occur, but are relatively infrequent and don't really diminish the XM experience. If you like quality radio, there really is nothing close to this. This is a very good first generation product, and the Sony portability is a plus - I have the home kit also and it works perfectly with the antenna sitting on a bureau next to my window.
